Michale Graves lives in Buenos Aires: the perfect ending of a Halloween weekend.
The iconic ex-Misfits singer, Michale Graves, came back to Buenos Aires just a few years after his last performance in the city. The date was November 2nd, the place was Groove, in the heart of Palermo town.
The local support bands were Horror Inc. (Horror Punk band that started their set at 19.15 and gave us all the perfect opening for what we wanted to hear that night), Cobra Sarli (who began playing at 20 hs), and Gatos Sucios (a 30-year career local Punk band, which played at 20.45).
When the lights went off and the curtains got opened around 21.40, the Graves’ band started playing the instrumental track “Abominable Dr. Phibes” and followed with “American Psycho” (for many people, their first approach to Michale era of Misfits, as it was the intro of the album “American Psycho”) as Michale was dressed as a scarecrow. The Halloween weekend had all of us with a spooky vibe!
“Speak of the Devil”, “Walk Among Us,” and “From Hell They Came” were the next songs on the setlist. Still holding on to the flame that was “American Psycho”. Something that guided us to the next song, and one of the highlights of the evening: “Dig Up Her Bones”.
This time, Michale had space for a couple of songs from his solo career. His previous shows in Buenos Aires were filled with a special set of his 2 Misfits albums. And nothing more than that. Fans loved it, of course, but he’s more than just an ex-singer of a band. So, “The Beginning of the End” was the next song.
“Lost in Space” brought the “Famous Monsters” fans to the pit, and everyone sang it along. Followed by another of his own: “1 Million Light Years From Her”.
Then, “Shining”, “Crimson Ghost” and “Dust to Dust”, where he jumped to the crowd and sang the whole track, being held by his fans. The next song, “Punk Rock Is Dead,” was played with him still offstage, shaking hands and receiving hugs from the people in the front row.
It was time for a “Famous…” set, so “Forbidden Zone”, “Scream!” (started with the crowd singing the classic chant of the intro before it was played), “Saturday Night”, “Descending Angel”, and “Hunting Humans” arrived on the setlist. He returned for a second to “American…” playing “Resurrection”, but then resumed the “Famous…” set with “Pumpkin Head” and “Fiend Club”.
“Casket” was the next song on the setlist, and after that “When We Were Angels”, a song from his epoch with Marky Ramone’s band. “Don’t Open ‘Til Doomsday”, and then “Halloween”, from the Danzig era of Misfits. It was a big surprise for everyone, and became one of the most celebrated songs of the night.
With “Best of Me”, Michale went back to his solo career, followed by “What a Wonderful World”, the Joey Ramone’s cover of the classic Louis Armstrong song.
After that, the band went backstage, waiting for the encore. Where the crowd took the chance to sing “Olé Olé” loudly and make the band come back to play the final songs.
Those songs were “Hybrid Moments”, another jewel from the Danzig era; “Helena”, and Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs”. That ending was surreal; we all share the same grief about Ozzy’s passing. And it became clear when everyone in the crowd sang the whole lyrics and guitar riffs.
