Dark Angel Rocked Arizona
Mesa AZ September 7
In the music world, some bands consistently fly under the radar, but their influence is undeniable. One such band is Dark Angel, a thrash metal group from Downey, California, that formed in 1981. After a long hiatus and a decade long reunion, the band faced a significant loss in 2023 with the death of guitarist Jim Durkin , who was the last remaining original member.
Rather than disbanding, the group chose to honor Durkin’s memory. They welcomed his replacement, guitarist Laura Christine , and launched their first U.S. tour in 30 years, aptly named “The Extinction Level Event Tour.” This tour also celebrates their recently released fiifth album of the same name. The title track, “Extinction Level Event,” holds a special significance as it was one of the last songs Durkin ever wrote, though he never had the chance to perform it live.
During their show in Mesa, which was the third stop on the tour, Dark Angel proved their lasting power. They opened with classics like “We Have Arrived,” “Time Does Not Heal,” and “No One Answers” before dedicating the title track of their new album to their late bandmate. The current
lineup features returni ng members Ron Rinehart (vocals), Gene Hoglan (drums), Eric Meyer (guitar), and Michael Gonzalez (bass), along with the newest addition, Laura Christine.
Despite a lack of major awards or commercial chart success (only one album, Leave Scars , made it to the Billboard 200), Dark Angel’s impact on the metal scene is undeniable. They are cited as an influence by many well -known bands, including Pantera and Cannibal Corpse. Their loyal fanbase, who have supported them through decades of ups and downs, is a test ament to the band’s enduring legacy.
