Jerry Cantrell at the Marquee Theater

Tempe, Arizona, August 15th

Jerry Cantrell made his way back to Tempe, Arizona, for his I Want Blood tour at the Marquee Theater.

It was a night steeped in nostalgia, featuring songs from Alice in Chains and highlighting Cantrell’s impressive solo career. The opening track that set the mood for the evening was ‘Echoes of Laughter,’ followed by ‘Vilified,’ ‘Dickeye,’ and ‘Afterglow.’ Notably absent was Greg Pucaito, who usually handles most of the AIC songs, with Zac Throne stepping in to cover his parts. Roy Mayorga returned on drums, and if you haven’t seen him live, you’re truly missing out. He has played with various projects over the years, and every time I see him perform, I feel a surge of excitement. He brings a precision to the music and, as always, never misses a cue. He has undoubtedly elevated Cantrell’s live performance to new heights. As the night progressed, the audience buzzed with anticipation, knowing they were about to hear AIC classics, and Jerry Cantrell certainly knew how to select crowd-pleasers. The first AIC song was ‘Them Bones,’ which captivated everyone in attendance as fans sang along passionately. Following that was ‘Rain When I Die,’ which resonated deeply, paying homage to the late Layne Staley. Cantrell wrapped up the show with ‘Rooster’ from the 1992 Alice In Chains album ‘Dirt,’ as we all know is a tribute to Cantrell’s father, who served in Vietnam.
