Amenra, at the Nile Theater AZ last May 5th
The Nile Theater was graced with Amenra’s presence, and I don’t know why Arizona was sleeping on this tour, but the prothat didn’t show up missed out. This was such a powerful lineup. We had Slow Crush opening up the show with their graceful doomy Shoegaze. The almighty Primitive Man is a sludge funeral doom metal masterpiece. Then, of course, the headliner, Amenra!
Amenra is raw, powerful, and dynamic; it’s full of rage and dynamic. If you’ve never seen them live, you’re seriously missing out on one of, if not the best, live performances you’ll ever see. It’s like being hit with a wave of different emotions all balled up inside, waiting to be released at the perfect climax. The band’s musical dynamic extends deep into the earth’s core. Going from beautiful soulful harmonies to deep, heavy riffs. Watching them live is an honor, and Mesa, AZ, was the place to be on a Sunday night.
Collen, the frontman of the band, spends most of his time with his back turned to the crowd, only to grace us with his face, which is perfectly timed to the song’s most powerful part. When I watch Collin, the movie American Beauty comes to mind. It’s a masterpiece, just like Amenras music, so beautifully done, but then has the feeling of pure chaos, like everything is crashing down on you. Seeing Amenra live is a journey into your psyche. It takes you on two journeys, one being beautiful and in a trance-like state, and the other being pure chaos. Which then collide into each other at the end of their concert. They could play for 3 hours, and not one person would be bored, and we would all still want more. I highly recommend seeing them live if you haven’t!
