The Argentine punk rock band “Expulsados” was founded in 1993, inspired by The Ramones.
Throughout their career, they have shared the stage with emblematic national and international punk bands, such as Bad Religion, The Toy Dolls, Attaque 77, and Trotsky Vengarán, as well as with members of The Ramones, such as CJ, Marky, and Richie Ramone. They have also participated in major festivals such as Pepsi Music, Quilmes Rock, and Cosquín Rock, and have toured Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Mexico. In addition, Sebastián Expulsado, the vocalist, participated in Marky Ramone‘s tour in his project “Marky Ramone and Friends”, which toured Spain, Italy, Slovakia, China, Austria, and Portugal, as well as concerts in Latin America, Africa, Israel, and Greece.
Today we have the pleasure of interviewing Sebastián Expulsado, leader and founder of the band.
SUNRAY: Hi Sebastian! In 2024, your album “Cuarto para espectros” turns 20years old. What significance does this work hold within your discography?
Sebastian Expulsado: think this was a pivotal album for the band. On one hand, it was our first experience in a studio that wasn´t ours, and we had a producer. On the other hand, it was our first album with a new label (Pop Art). The band´s songs started to get more exposure, and more people began coming to our shows.
SUNRAY: When you recorded your fourth album, the world and the band were different. What do you remember about those days so long ago?
Sebastian Expulsado: I remember that life was less complicated. We had fewer responsibilities, but fundamentally, the band was the same. Expulsados was born making songs to entertain people and have a good time with friends, and to this day, the goal is the same.
SUNRAY: “Cuarto para espectros” was produced by Juanchi Baleirón from Los Pericos. What impact did the producer have on the final result?
Sebastian Expulsado: Juanchi is a master not only as a producer but as a person. In the studio, he gave us the confidence and tranquility needed for the album to flow. He always respected the band´s style and sought to enhance it.
SUNRAY: Your last album (“El laberinto de neblina”) is two years old. Are you working on material for a new album?
Sebastian Expulsado: Yes, we’ve already voted on the first songs we’re going to start working on for the next album. Sometimes, between shows, rehearsals, and tours, it’s hard to find time to develop something new, but we’re on our way.
SUNRAY: What plans do you have for the rest of this year?
Sebastian Expulsado: We just returned from a tour in the south of Argentina. Our next show is on the 26th at Teatro Flores, and we’ll continue progressing with the new album until the end of the year.
SUNRAY: You’ve been playing together for over 30 years. Beyond lineup changes, how do you manage to survive for so long without burning out?
Sebastian Expulsado: By prioritizing friendship, playing because we’re passionate about music, and without seeking an end beyond dedicating ourselves to it without asking for anything in return. We talk about our problems face-to-face in rehearsals, make decisions together, and distribute responsibilities and benefits democratically. Basically, I think those are the principles that keep us together.
SUNRAY: The best and worst of these three decades sweating it out in punk rock.
Sebastian Expulsado: Honestly, I couldn’t complain about anything. Punk rock has given me everything.
SUNRAY: On Saturday the 26th of this month, you will be playing the complete album along with your classic hits at Teatro Flores to celebrate the anniversary. What do you have prepared for that night? Will there be guests?
Sebastian Expulsado: We’ll definitely play the complete album and add songs from others. Two friend bands, AHORA DESPUES and CHOCRONES, will open the event. Sergio “Mono” Riveros will also join us on keyboards, and maybe a surprise guest will come on stage. See you there!!

SUNRAY: En este 2024, su disco “Cuarto para espectros” cumple nada menos que 2 décadas. ¿Qué importancia tiene ese trabajo dentro de su discografía?
Sebastian Expulsado: Ese creo que fue un disco bisagra para la banda. Por un lado, fue nuestra primera experiencia en un estudio que no era el nuestro y contando con un productor.
Por otro lado, fue nuestro primer disco con un nuevo sello (PopArt).
Las canciones de la banda comenzaron a tener más difusión y más gente empezó a venir a nuestros shows.
SUNRAY: Cuando grabaron su cuarto disco, el mundo y la banda eran otros. ¿Qué recuerdan de esos días de hace tanto tiempo?
Sebastian Expulsado: Recuerdo que la vida era menos complicada.
Teníamos menos responsabilidades pero la banda, en lo fundamental, era la misma.
Expulsados nació haciendo canciones para llegar a la gente, pasarla bien entre amigos y hasta hoy en día el objetivo es el mismo.
SUNRAY: “Cuarto para espectros” fue producido por Juanchi Baleirón de Los Pericos, ¿qué incidencia tuvo el productor en el resultado final?
Sebastian Expulsado: Juanchi es un maestro no solo como productor sino como persona. En el estudio nos dió la confianza y la tranquilidad necesaria para que el disco fluyera. Siempre respeto el estilo de la banda y buscó potenciarlo.
SUNRAY: Su último disco (“El laberinto de neblina”) es de hace 2 años. ¿Están trabajando en material para un nuevo disco?
Sebastian Expulsado: Si, ya votamos las primeras canciones que vamos a empezar a trabajar para el disco próximo.
A veces, entre shows, ensayos y giras, cuesta encontrar tiempo para desarrollar algo nuevo pero estamos en camino.
SUNRAY: ¿Qué planes tienen para lo que resta de este año?
Sebastian Expulsado: Recién volvemos de hacer una gira por el sur de Argentina. Nuestro próximo show es el 26 en el Teatro Flores y hasta fin de año seguir avanzando con el nuevo disco.
SUNRAY: Tocan juntos desde hace más de 30 años. Más allá de los cambios de integrantes, ¿cómo se hace para sobrevivir tantos años y no morir en el intento?
Sebastian Expulsado: Priorizando la amistad, tocando porque nos apasiona la música y sin buscar un fin más allá que el de entregarnos a ella sin pedir nada a cambio, hablando nuestros problemas cara a cara en los ensayos y tomando todas las decisiones, y repartiendo las responsabilidades y beneficios, de forma democrática.
Básicamente creo que esos son los principios que nosmantienen juntos.
SUNRAY: Lo mejor y lo peor de estas 3 décadas sudando la camiseta del punk rock.
Sebastian Expulsado: Realmente no me podría quejar de nada. El Punk Rock me dió todo.
SUNRAY: El sábado 26 de este mes, van a estar tocando el disco completo más sus clásicos de siempre en el Teatro Flores como festejo aniversario. ¿Qué tienen preparado para esa noche?
¿Va a haber invitados?
Sebastian Expulsado: Seguramente toquemos el disco completo y agreguemos canciones de otros. Estarán abriendo el evento 2 bandas amigas: AHORA DESPUES y CHOCRONES.
También nos estará acompañando Sergio “Mono” Riveros en teclados, y quizás algún invitado sorpresa suba al escenario. Nos vemos allá!!

El próximo sábado 26 de octubre, Expulsados, celebrará los 20 años de su icónico disco “Cuarto para espectros” en El Teatro Flores, ubicado en Av. Rivadavia 7806, C.A.B.A. En esta ocasión, realizarán un recorrido completo por las canciones del disco y los temas más destacados de su carrera.
